Ketosis, Veganism and Fasting Come Together Here

Do you want to eat clean, easily burn fat, and enjoy great health as a result?  Sounds awesome, yes?  Well, when ketosis, veganism and fasting come together, it’s entirely possible to synergize optimal health with food that tastes just out of this world!

The keto / vegan / fasting combination is without a doubt the best dietary lifestyle for your mind, body and hey, even the planet.  When these three powerhouses are combined, your health and wellbeing will be enhanced like never before!

So where to begin?  Maybe you’ve heard of one or even two, but not the full trio. First up are some basic definitions of each three that will then no doubt help you understand this health-promoting lifestyle.

What is Ketosis?

Ketosis is an entirely natural metabolic state characterized by raised levels of ketones in the tissues of our bodies.  Ketones are created in the liver when the body doesn’t have sufficient levels of insulin to allow blood sugars to be turned into energy.  In the absence of that energy source, your body targets fat for an energy source instead.  Ketones are that fat turned into energy.

Consequently, a ketogenic diet is a high fat, low protein, minimal carb diet that re-directs your body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates as energy.  Ketosis offers a variety of health benefits including weight loss, lowered blood sugar levels, and quick fat burning properties.

What is Veganism?

The UK’s Vegan Society states that veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.

A vegan diet is a plant-based diet with no animal products.  That includes things like eggs, dairy milk, cheese, and even honey. The vegan diet then consists of things like vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts.  Eating vegan makes sense for your health as vegan foods are packed with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants.

Weight loss, mental clarity, lowered blood pressure, and reduced risk exposure of developing other serious medical conditions are just some of the benefits of eating the vegan way.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is the practice of refraining from the consumption of any sort of food over a given period of time.  This may at first sound quite alien to what we have long been told is supposedly the case – that we should be eating three regular meals a day, with snacks mixed in, no questions asked.  Fasting fundamentally challenges that preconception, particularly so as the evidence continues to grow that fasting provides many benefits.

It is no coincidence that fasting has long been practiced, in some form or another, for thousands of years and is integral to some of the world’s major religions.

Fasting is particularly effective when it comes to weight loss.  That’s because fasting causes the body’s appetite to actually diminish which in turn means less calories consumed.

The logic behind this is that fasting allows for the appetite to be dampened down as opposed to the body burning more calories.  Put another way, if you’re less hungry, the less you will eat.  That way you rely on calorie reduction by abstinence rather than the more orthodox way of consuming calories to subsequently try and then burn them off.

Other benefits of fasting include improved cognitive function, a detox for your liver, improved skin, lowered blood pressure, and fighting off inflammation in the body.

There are a range of plans out there for intermittent fasting.  Three of the most popular are:

  • The 16 / 8. This consists of 16 hours of fasting followed by an eight-hour period to eat.
  • The 5 / 2. Here the user doesn’t eat for two straight days and then can eat for the following five.  This can be varied to incorporate minimal calorie consumption (400 to 500 a day) on each of the two fasting days.
  • Alternate day fasting. This involves eating on one day and abstaining on the next. This can, in some cases (allowing for time taken to sleep), mean not eating for up to 36 hours at a time.  Like with the 5 / 2, some eat a bare minimum of calories on their two not-eating days.

Note:  as with all fasting regimes, it is vital to stay hydrated throughout, consuming water or things like black coffee or modest amounts of plant-based milks (oat, almond, etc.).

Three IS the Magic Number

With the worldwide obesity epidemic, particularly so in the West, more and more of us are looking for effective solutions to not only take off the excess weight but to keep off the pounds.  Ketosis, veganism and fasting are all excellent ways to tackle weight loss – and that’s just them on their own!  Combined, they make the most potent of weapons for weight loss and keeping your body as healthy as possible courtesy of what you eat, when you eat, and what you don’t.

Given that “orthodox” keto diets are heavy with meat, dairy and eggs, some tweaking is needed to incorporate veganism into that mix.  However, it’s very do-able!  The key is to ensure on your non-fasting days, you fill up on low carb, non-starchy green vegetables, like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower.  Mushrooms and avocados are also great to eat, as well as some nuts, and seeds.

This is an incredibly effective way to both lose weight and help yourself get fit.  So welcome – you have come to the right place for taking the best steps you can for your health!  We will help to guide you every step of the way including tips, recipes, products, and everything you need to know to get started and stay focused on your own life transforming keto / vegan/ fasting journey.
